From Powder Bed to Orbit – Insights into DLR Research and Transfer into Propulsion Products for Space

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is developing innovative materials and processes in the field of additive manufacturing (AM) using laser powder bed fusion. A unique range of TRLs is covered, ranging from fundamental materials research to the qualification of AM components for aerospace applications.

ISPTech provides green in-space propulsion technologies for any spacecraft. Based on more than a decade of research and development activities at DLR. The products of ISPTech rely on AM, which allows a new way of designing and operating in space propulsion hardware.

The presentation will give an insight into DLR research in laser powder bed fusion. For example, a digital tool will be shown to visualize process monitoring data in three dimensions mapped on the CAD of the part. An overview on the unique features which are made possible by additive manufacturing will be shown, paving the way for commercialization of green propulsion technologies by ISPTech. Finally, the current qualification status of AM thrusters for a space mission will be presented.
